Anniversary Shoot

Dressing Jeri and Jeff for their anniversary shoot with Sheradee Hurst Photography was so much fun! Jeri is the perfect shape for fit and flare, and I knew this was the dress when I saw it. She is wearing a gorgeous multi-colored Milly dress with a skinny Reiss belt and black pumps. Jeff is wearing a blue suit and white button-down shirt from his closet and a Brooks Brothers burgundy pocket square highlighting one of the many colors in Jeri’s dress. They both look gorgeous! Look how adorable these two are together. Beautiful photos!

Fly Away With Me

“Fly Away with Me,” created by Sheradee Hurst Photography and Krissi Farrimond, was recently published by Smitten Magazine. This stylized wedding shoot is an invitation to endless love. The white doves, a central part of this wedding story, symbolize love, devotion, and promise, the promise of never ending love. Doves mate for life which makes their intriguing story of a lifelong bond, unusual in the animal kingdom and relatable to two people in love. The live dove release set the tone for the entire shoot. Every detail and piece of planning centered around this beautiful release.

Waldo’s Pond was the perfect setting for our love story because of a small, tree-lined island so intimate and protected by its surroundings, one needs only to go over the bridge to be in their own little world. The island, called “Waldo’s Landing,” is the perfect spot for a couple exchanging vows just above a whisper and still being heard by their dearest friends.

Organic with a bit of an early 70s vibe shaped the vision of “Fly Away with Me.” The table is set with vintage ceramic doves and Anchor Hocking Fire King plates, made in the early 70s.

Additionally, an empire waisted, flowing gown, a beautifully updated Brigitte Bardot hairstyle and strong eyes for our bride told her story. The Phaedra gown by Claire Pettibone was chosen specifically for the gorgeous, low back, adorned with roses and the empire waist. It features flowing, silk chiffon over floral lace. It is elegant and effortless, a wedding gown possessing striking beauty and comfortable ease. I can’t imagine the bride, on this day, any other way. She feels free and uninhibited, and ready to spend the day nature-gazing and toasting true love. The groom’s style complimented her uninhibited look also. The gown and groom’s attire were provided by JJ Kelly Bridal, where saying yes to the dress means celebrating with a champagne toast in store. Hairstylist, Andrea Lemonds gave Anna a 70s-inspired updo. Freelance and MarloHaus makeup artist, Krystal Engel, completed the look with a soft, natural lip.

We used the perfect 70s-inspired settee from Ruby’s Vintage Rentals and an heirloom antique tea cart borrowed from a friend. The blues and greens in the bridal shoes, the cake and the settee, along with the wooded island, communicate the perfect color palette for organic and vintage 70s.

The beautiful, three-tiered, gold and water color-inspired, hand painted cake was designed and created by Amy Cakes. It features green water color painting, imperfect gold stripes and hand-made sugar flowers. We wanted the cake to represent nature and the water while looking glamorous at the same time.

Freehand calligraphy stationery felt like the organic choice. Christina Ketter, owner of Letter with a K, used stationery-textured paper and hand made the rsvp envelope. The stationery, too, has a very organic feel. The calligraphy of the hand written invitations, rsvp card, menu, and other stationery was inspired by the fly away with me theme as the calligrapher wanted to give it a feeling of floating on air. Christina hand embossed several pieces to add dimension and more texture, and she used a wax seal with a dove insignia as the final touch. Christina also hand painted the beautiful “Fly Away with Me” sign to invite guests to leave the constraints of their every day stress for a few hours, and fly away with the couple to this moment of love.

The gorgeous flowers were intentionally loosely arranged, white and cream and the palest pink to give an organic feel. The various bouquets feature french tulips, peonies, anemones, garden roses and lots of seeded eucalyptus designed and created by Trochta’s Flowers.

We searched the globe for unique jewelry pieces as traditional is not the taste of this bride and groom. On loan from De Bello Designs Jewelry in Northern California, the pieces consist of a one-of-a-kind, handmade copper and round diamond ring, a hammered copper, spiral groom’s ring, copper bezeled and diamond teardrop earrings and a right-hand copper ring set with a 2 ct. natural emerald.

The getaway look was the “Celine” jumpsuit by Halston Heritage, paired with Ted Baker “Annabilla” pointed-toe pumps with a rhinestone brooch accent and a metallic heel. We finished the look with a thick copper cuff with brass detail, set with a step cut, square green tourmaline, handmade by De Bello Designs Jewelry.

We felt it was very important to shoot this wedding on film, rather than digital, to add a crowning touch of 70s reality. So that every aspect drew you back to fly away with this couple.

Family Photo Shoot: What to Wear?

Shopping for the Hopping family photo shoot took me no further than their closets. It was easy to pull together an adorable look with their own clothes. They are all dressed in blue and white (perfect for spring/summer photos) with varying patterns and little pops of color. Meredith is dressed in a blue and white striped tee, a cobalt blue full-midi skirt and a coral necklace. Nate is retro chic in blue jeans, a light blue and cobalt blue-striped button down, a grey pin-striped vest and a coral bow-tie. Eleonore is wearing a white sundress adorned with blue whales and a big, bright pink bow. Francesca is wearing a blue with white polkadots romper and a white-eyelet sun hat. They look adorable, and their pictures, taken by St. Louis photographer, Kristi Foster, turned out great!

If you’re trying to decide how to dress for your next family shoot, how about adding interest and revealing individual personalities while keeping your family photos beautiful and cohesive? Try adding your color and patterns. I love white, I really do, but I’ve seen too many pictures where the girls are wearing white sundresses and the boys are wearing khaki pants and white shirts. (The exception to this thought is a beach wedding. It could be tricky  getting around wearing a white dress. Also in this case, always wear what the bride requests. Just a tip, you’re welcome.) Adding color and patterns can be so much fun and not “too busy” at all. Just make sure to wear the same color palette so you look like you all belong in the same photo.

Park City in June

Planning an early summer getaway in the mountains? I’ve got you covered. Here’s what I plan to pack for Park City in early June. With highs in the upper 60s and lows in the upper 30s, long sleeves and light sweaters will be key for comfortability. It’s likely I won’t be packing all the bags below, but two or three for sure!

A full midi: Now & Later

With this post, you can see I’m obsessed with a couple of things:

1. A full skirt. It’s true, I’m obsessed! Full midi skirts are darling. You can dress them up or down, man them up a little with a denim jacket, moto jacket or blazer, and they are 100% multi-seasonal. Go ahead and buy your full midi. Wear it now with sweaters and jackets, tights, booties, flats or pumps. Then let this sweet piece take you right into spring and summer when you’ll pair it with sandals, big floppy hats and flip flops or a gorgeous head scarf with sunglasses.

If you’re thinking, “This pleated ditty will look terrible on me.” Consider wearing it with a wide belt that covers the waist and the top of the pleats.

2. ASOS. I know, I can’t help myself. They have the greatest selection of midi skirts with tons of colors, patterns and textures. Plus, they offer regular, petite and curve sizes! And they have free & easy returns.

A Guide to Closet Staples

Now is the time to purge your closet of things you never wear because they are faded, out-dated or don’t fit properly and buy some quality closet staples that always look great, go with everything and will show off accessories you’ve carefully chosen, invested in and accumulated over the years (wait, have you been doing this?).  If your white tee has a camo pocket and a gold chain, chances are, you’re not going to wear it very often (never is my hope…it’s an item I actually just saw on sale, please don’t buy it).

While there are exceptions to every rule, here are some general guidelines to shopping for staples:

  • Having black in your closet is very helpful, but your closet staples don’t have to be black. Denim, cream, white, grey, navy and black are perfect for staples.
  • If the garment has cutouts or embellishments, typically, it’s not a staple.
  • Bright prints and bold patterns aren’t staples.
  • Look for things that are multi-seasonal: denim, shirts with sleeves that roll, garments that can be worn alone or as a layer.

Honestly, if it’s super memorable, other than how great it fit you, it’s not a staple. A staple is something you can wear over and over, while completely changing up how you wear it or what you wear it with.

Keep your eyes peeled for classic pieces like this:

Tips:
  1. If you can find your size, this is a great time to buy a coat.
  2. If you see something online at Nordstrom, but they don’t have your size, call a store and ask them to do a last-in-the-company check. I assume this works for lots of stores, but I’ve only done it one million times at Nordstrom.
  3. Preserve your closet staples by dry-cleaning as few times as possible, re-shaping, smoothing and laying flat to dry. If you have a “hand wash” setting on your washer, use it.

More Than Once

The worst thing about dressing for a formal event, is buying a dress you’ll only wear once. Let’s face it, there aren’t many dresses that can accomplish fancy-frock and shopping-with-the-girls. (No matter what your best friend, the bride, says) But this gorgeous floor-length dress will make you the belle of the ball and street chic!
